Have a Heart: Springfield Students Wins Poster Contest
A Springfield fifth-grader's work was chosen over hundreds of other students' in the state's biennial Organ/Tissue Donor Poster Contest.
Richa Patel, an 11-year old Hazel Dell Elementary student, finished first in her age group and was honored with the other three winners at a ceremony Wednesday afternoon in the secretary of state's office.
The overall winner, a high school senior from Bradley, will see her poster used in hospitals and other locations around the state.
The secretary of state and the Donate Life Illinois Coalition sponsor the poster contest to promote organ and tissue donation. More than 5,000 people are on the waiting list for an organ or tissue donation, and about 300 people die every year waiting for a transplant.
