Mt. Zion Man Charged With Wife's Murder
A Mt. Zion man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife more than a year ago.
When Lisa Carter, 47, was found unresponsive on her bathroom floor at one in the morning last April, police initially said it was a drowning. Now, 15 months later, they say her death was always considered a murder and have pinned the crime on her husband, Chad Cutler, 37.
It was the arrest for which some in the Cutler's Mt. Zion neighborhood were waiting.
"I think most neighbors were expecting this to happen at some point," said neighbor Felicia Joyce.
Joyce says the couple was far from happy.
"You know, he wasn't nice to her all the time, and he just wasn't very friendly either. So it wasn't too surprising," Joyce said.
Macon County court documents tell a similar tale.
On Feb. 2 - just under three months before her death - Lisa Cutler filed for, and received, an emergency protection order against Chad Cutler.
On Feb. 16 - the same day her restraining order was renewed - Cutler filed for divorce.
Documents show she petitioned for temporary relief including: primary custody of their children, the use of the house while Chad Cutler paid the bills, the use of a 2011 Chevy Traverse, and financial support.
Five days later, her lawyer withdrew the restraining order, but the divorce paperwork remained in effect.
Authorities are saying little about the case or Cutler's possible motives.
Formal charges are expected to be filed next week.
"It would be first-degree murder, but as far as the details of those charges, it's still too early to say."
For now, Chad Cutler is in Macon County Jail with a bail of $5 million, and Joyce is glad to hear it.
"If we want to get out, walk the dog, play in the yard with the kids, we feel a little more comfortable knowing that's where he needs to be at this point in time," Joyce said.
