Keeping Fairgoers Cool, Safe in the Heat
Firefighters and first responders are standing by in New Berlin in case the heat on this first day of summer takes a toll on any Sangamon County fairgoers.
Ninety degree temperatures are projected for the entire weekend.
Sangamon County Sheriff's deputies and New Berlin firefighters are circling the fairgrounds to watch for anyone who might need help.
An ambulance will also be there all weekend in case of an emergency.
Close to 200 volunteers are also handing out water to anyone who needs it.
The fair president has set up two air conditioned buildings, where fairgoers can get out of the sun in the midst of all of the fun.
"The hotter it gets, the more people get out there, it gets a lot more difficult," said Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Jesse Budd. "People are trying to get around each other, it gets crowded."
Budd recommends a few things, if you plan to come out to the fair this weekend.
Bring plenty of water, and wear light clothing. And if you're bringing kids, carry along a cold wet wash cloth and a bag of ice, in case they overheat.
