Quinn Signs New Union Restrictions
Some state employees will lose their memberships to unions. Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill Friday that would ban certain state employees from joining unions. This would force close to 2,000 current members to give up their memberships. According to AFSCME, Quinn can now deny more than 3,500 employees union membership.
AFSCME leaders are upset current union members can lose their memberships.
"He wants to rip their rights away from them and say they have no such rights, and have to be at-will employees and can be gotten rid of at any whim at all," AFSCME Council 31 regional director Jeff Bigelow said. "And there won't be any ability for them to bargain for wages, hours, or working conditions."
Quinn will have one year to make a list of the state employees banned from joining unions.
