April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
When driving around town this month, you may notice blue pinwheels staked in front lawns or people wearing blue ribbons. That's because April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Statistics show there are 5,000 fewer reported child abuse cases in Illinois than there were five years ago. Ninety kids in Illinois died from child abuse last year.
Today at the Henson Robinson Zoo, Mayor Michael Houston spoke about the importance of spreading awareness.
"If there's one case, that's one too many," Houston said. "When we take a look at over 101,000 reported cases in fiscal year '11, it's a reduction from what previous years have been. It's still a very serious problem."
Kids from Children's House Daycare sang at the event. The theme this month is Every Child Matters.
