Childcare Providers Rally At Capitol
Childcare providers and parents came to the capitol today to try to convince lawmakers to change the childcare assistance program. People at the rally said they want lawmakers to raise the income requirement so it is easier for families to get childcare services. They also want to change the co-pay system by making the co-payments rise as the families' incomes rise.
Supporters say many families have to choose between making more money or giving up childcare assistance.
"It's really become a hard choice between affording child care and affording food," home family childcare provider Faith Arnold said. "It really has become that devastating here in Illinois. So I would like for our legislatures and our state to realize that parents need childcare, parents do want to work, and we need to make sure that childcare is affordable."
The group also called on lawmakers to fully fund the childcare assistance program, claiming low-income families only have 7 percent of their income left to pay for childcare.
