Fake Cop Reports Now up to Five
There are new reports of a fake cop in both Morgan and Sangamon counties.
The latest report from Morgan County is based on an incident that took place around 8:30 Saturday evening. A female driver was going eastbound on Route 104 in the Waverly area. A white vehicle with a rotating light in the dash came up behind her. That's when the driver called 911 and pulled into a Fanco gas station. The person who had been following her with the flashing light then made a U-turn and took off in the opposite direction.
We are working with the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department at this time to get details on the incident there from Saturday. The latest fake cop run-ins bring the total up to five in the last week, all of them in Sangamon and Morgan counties. So far, deputies there have not been able to connect the string of incidents.
Deputies are warning you to do just as the woman in Morgan County did on Saturday night. If you're being pulled over by what appears to be a police car, call 911 to confirm that it is in fact an officer. Dispatch will help you. Also, pull over in a public, well-lit place like a gas station. A real officer will continue making a lawful stop in a public place.
