Did You Know: Posting Photos of Completed Ballots Illegal in IL
Thinking about snapping a photo of your completed ballot and posting it to social media? You may want to think again, the Illinois State Board of Elections warns.
According to the board, it's illegal to publicly display a completed ballot. Section 29-9 of the Illinois Compiled Statutes says:
"Except as permitted by this Code, any person who knowingly marks his ballot or casts his vote on a voting machine or voting device so that it can be observed by another person, and any person who knowingly observes another person lawfully marking a ballot or lawfully casting his vote on a voting machine or voting device, shall be guilty of a Class 4 felony."The board tells us they do not prosecute violations like these--that would be up to the state's attorney. Still, they recommend voters "refrain from conduct that could be considered criminal."
