Black Friday Moving to Thanksgiving Day

Forget that nap after turkey dinner! More shoppers will hit the stores Thanksgiving day, as some Black Friday retailers open a day early.

"My opinion is more or less keep it rolling, keep the stores open, keep the money flowing and keep the economy moving," Larry Fain said while shopping in Springfield.

Kmart will open at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving day. Walmart, Toys 'R' Us and Sears will all open at 8 p.m. on Turkey Day. Target will open at 9 p.m., which is still three hours earlier than it opened last year.

"Through feedback we received, we saw some guests would like to shop on Thanksgiving day because they didn't want that rush the day after," Springfield Target department manager Paul Perrone said. "So we've opened our doors a little earlier to accommodate those guests."

About 51 percent of consumers plan to go holiday shopping Thanksgiving weekend, according to a study by the consulting firm Bain. Most hit the stores to take advantage of special deals and doorbusters, but for Mandy Maple, it's just a fun tradition.

"I do enjoy Black Friday shopping, so I'll be out there with all the other crazies," she said.

Not only will some avoid the cash registers to spend time with family on Thanksgiving, they're asking big box retailers to close so employees and shoppers will do the same. On the website change.org, people have started petitions asking stores like Target and Sears to close.

Shopper Amy Duncan said she thinks signing a petition may be a little extreme.

"I'm kind of old school," she said. "I would much rather spend my days with my family and I think it should remain the same. I actually run a retail shop and I will not be open Thanksgiving day."

Not all stores are opening on Thanksgiving. Best Buy still plans to open at 12 a.m. on Black Friday. Kohl's and White Oaks Mall will also open at midnight.
