Union Cleans Up Springfield Gateway
Members of a local union added some landscaping duties to their day today at one of the gateways into the city of Springfield.
A few members of Operating Engineers Local 965 trimmed bushes and pulled weeds near the corner of Dirksen Parkway and South Grand Avenue today.
Mike Zahn, the union's business manager, said the area is one of the main thoroughfares in the city, and he thinks it's been neglected. He just grew tired of driving past the overgrown shrubs.
"Our union hall is just down the road," Zahn said. "People drive by all the time and talk about how bad it looks. I don't like that. It's my hometown, and I thought we should do something about it."
Today was the second day the union members clipped branches and removed dead plants. City leaders said they're monitoring the area more closely and trying to get a better handle on maintenance.
Public works director Mark Mahoney said he'll take "any help we can get!" The city is looking to coordinate opportunities for volunteers to help with maintenance.
