Strong to severe thunderstorms rumbled across mid-Illinois yesterday with strong, damaging winds and locally heavy rainfall that lead to flash flooding in a number of locations. The rainfall total for Springfield was a record breaker. The 3.55" of rain measured at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport easily beat the previous record of 2.56" set on September 2, 1941.
Look for a return to mostly sunny skies, cooler temperatures and lower humidity today, but a steep pressure gradient between the departing low pressure and high pressure building into the Midwest will produce strong, gusty winds up to 30 mph today and up to 25 mph tomorrow before gradually calming down over the first part of the weekend.
The outlook for the remainder of the Labor Day holiday weekend features abundant sunshine, pleasant conditions and gradually warming temperatures from the lower to mid- 70's tomorrow to the upper 80's by Monday.
Quiet weather with seasonably warm temperatures continues into the middle part of the upcoming week before the next chance of rain arrives late Tuesday night or Wednesday.
The 7-day temperature outlook: highs will be in the lower to mid- 70's today and tomorrow; around 80 Sunday; upper 80's Labor Day and Tuesday; and, mid- 80's Wednesday and Thursday. Overnight lows will be in the upper 40's tonight; around 50 tomorrow night; upper 50's Sunday night; and mid- 60's Monday through Wednesday night.
