Priest accused of abuse faints in court
March 17, 2010 18:47 EDT
GENEVA, Ill. (AP) -- A Roman Catholic priest charged with predatory criminal sexual assault fainted during a hearing, delaying a decision on a bond reduction request.
The Rev. Alejandro Flores was seeking to have his bail reduced from $1 million to $200,000 on Wednesday when he collapsed in Kane County Circuit Court.
The Kane County state's attorney's office says the 37-year-old Bolivian-born priest abused a St. Charles child over a five-year period between Jan. 1, 2005 and Jan 1, 2010.
The state's attorney's office says Flores on Wednesday appeared to become woozy and faint during closing arguments before Associate Judge T. Jordan Gallagher. The judge called for a brief recess to get Flores medical attention, then continued the hearing until Thursday.
Flores was hospitalized briefly in January after falling from a church balcony in a purported suicide attempt after he was charged.
