Signs and Symptoms of Childhood Stroke
From the Brendon Smile website:
It is vital that we recognize the warning signs of an acute stroke and realize that a stroke can happen in children. The following are warning signs/symptoms of an acute stroke, and vary according to the age of the child:
-
Newborns- seizures, apnea, poor feeding, decreased tone, unilateral weakness, and other signs of depressed function in the immediate newborn period. Around 50% of strokes that happen in the perinatal period are not recognized until infancy or later when the child shows early hand preference (e.g. before 12 months), or other delays in motor, language, or cognitive development.
-
Infants and Young Children- acute stroke in this age range typically appears as a sudden change in function with hemiparesis, with or without seizures. Often in this age group stroke occurs with fever, headache, and lethargy as well.
-
Older children- acute stroke presents similarly to younger children but sudden disrupted language/communication may be more commonly recognized in this age group

These days, adults like you are spending more time at work than ever before. An unfortunate side effect is that, as a nation, we're becoming more inactive. This is a problem when you consider the fact that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease!
But take heart! It's a problem you can help fix by convincing your company to take part in the American Heart Association's National Walking Day.
On this day, employees are encouraged to wear sneakers to work and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It's a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to give your coworkers a friendly push toward a healthier life.

Illinois Judge Ratings
All judges running for retention, as well as candidates for Illinois judicial offices who won in the March 20 primary election, have been rated by Illinois State Bar Association
In counties outside Cook, ISBA conducts an advisory poll of members in the circuit or district from which a candidate seeks election or retention. Licensed lawyers who are not members of ISBA may request a ballot. The poll reflects the opinion of those lawyers who choose to respond, and not the opinion of ISBA.
"Voters often have difficulty learning about the qualifications of candidates for judicial office," said John E. Thies, of Urbana, president of the 33,000-member organization. "These independent ratings and polls are based on the views of the candidates' peers, and I encourage voters to consider them when deciding how to vote on November 6."
The ISBA, with offices in Springfield and Chicago, provides professional services to Illinois lawyers, and education and services to the public.

Illinois Open Data Site
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is ordering state agencies to make more data available online and urging local governments to do the same.
Agencies now have to make sharing data a priority when setting up new computer systems. They also have to step up their efforts to find raw data to share.
Information ranging from daily traffic to retail sales is already available. But that's just a fraction of the facts and figures generated by state government.
Agencies have four months to produce a plan for complying with the executive order issued Tuesday.
A "chief information officer" will establish policies to guide the project. Quinn says local governments can use that policy manual to launch their own transparency efforts.
