Illinois treasurer Dan Rutherford is trying to reunite veterans and their families with lost military medals, ribbons, dog tags and paperwork that was left in unclaimed safe-deposit boxes.
Rutherford says his office has 110 unclaimed medals collected from boxes, including 16 Purple Hearts. One medal even dates back to the Spanish American War.
He says some of the material may have been put in a safe-deposit box by people who eventually died or who have since moved.
Rutherford's working to connect the medals with their former owners through a program called Operation Reunite.
Rutherford says he hopes someone will recognize the names, so the items can be returned.

Festival of Trees Needs Volunteers
Press release from Memorial Medical Center:
Memorial's Festival of Trees Seeks Volunteers for Holiday Event
SPRINGFIELD - Memorial Medical Center Foundation seeks volunteers for its annual Festival of Trees event, which will be held Nov. 23-Dec. 1 in the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
The theme for the 24th annual event is "Rejoice!" "The Festival of Trees is a family-oriented event that has become a tradition for many people in central Illinois and features more than 160 beautifully decorated trees and wreaths," said Elena Kezelis, executive director of the Memorial Medical Center Foundation.
More than 1,000 volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of activities, including admission, train rides, decorating gingerbread cookies, assisting in the holiday kitchen and gift shop, and helping children with crafts.
The Festival's hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Nov. 23, Nov. 25-27 and Nov. 29-30, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 24 and Dec. 1; and from 4-8 p.m. on Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving Day).
Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and can register at MemorialsFestivalofTrees.com, where they can view open time slots and request a preferred area.
Every effort will be made to accommodate requests for a preferred area, Kezelis said. However, volunteers are needed in all areas to ensure a successful event. Volunteers receive a Festival of Trees commemorative pin and free admission on the day of their shift.
Memorial's Festival of Trees began in 1989 as an event to benefit the healthcare programs offered by Memorial Medical Center. Since then, the Festival has raised more than $3.2 million for projects and programs at Memorial, including Independence Square, Hospice, Memorial's Regional Cancer Center and Memorial's Regional Burn Center.
For more information about the Festival of Trees or to be a volunteer, contact the Festival of Trees office at (217) 788-4301 or visit the Festival's website at MemorialsFestivalofTrees.com.

Forever Home Feline Ranch in Rochester
"Forever Home Feline Ranch (FHFR) is a not-for-profit volunteer animal welfare group, registered and inspected by the State of Illinois. We are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) charity. We are also a PetSmart Partner, registered with PetSmart Charities.
Our threefold mission is to provide every cat in need a forever home, be a sanctuary where cats will have a second chance to live a full life in a no-cage, no-kill environment, and to lead the effort to make Central Illinois a no-kill community by ending euthanasia as a method of controlling feline populations.
FHFR is supported solely by community donations and fundraisers. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. We are administered by a Board of Directors and operated by a small but very dedicated group of volunteers. We are always looking for more volunteers as the number of cats in our care continues to grow. We conduct off-site adoptions at PetSmart and Ace Hardware (Walnut Street). Our adoptable cats are listed on Petfinder. We have saved over 400 cats since our inception in March 2009. 50% of the cats at FHFR are sanctuary cats, meaning their forever home is the Ranch. The other 50% are adoptable and can be seen at our off-site adoptions."

The End of film is near! Hollywood movie studios have advised theatre owners that by the end of 2013, 35mm film will no longer be made and distributed to theatres. Instead, movies will now be sent in a digital format which requires new projection equipment. The Roseland is in need of this new technology to stay open. The bids to purchase and install this new equipment came in at $51,937.23. Eisentraut Theatres hopes to raise $40,000.00 to help with the conversion costs and guarantee the Roseland will stay open for generations to come.

Signs and Symptoms of Childhood Stroke
From the Brendon Smile website:
It is vital that we recognize the warning signs of an acute stroke and realize that a stroke can happen in children. The following are warning signs/symptoms of an acute stroke, and vary according to the age of the child:
Newborns- seizures, apnea, poor feeding, decreased tone, unilateral weakness, and other signs of depressed function in the immediate newborn period. Around 50% of strokes that happen in the perinatal period are not recognized until infancy or later when the child shows early hand preference (e.g. before 12 months), or other delays in motor, language, or cognitive development.
Infants and Young Children- acute stroke in this age range typically appears as a sudden change in function with hemiparesis, with or without seizures. Often in this age group stroke occurs with fever, headache, and lethargy as well.
Older children- acute stroke presents similarly to younger children but sudden disrupted language/communication may be more commonly recognized in this age group

These days, adults like you are spending more time at work than ever before. An unfortunate side effect is that, as a nation, we're becoming more inactive. This is a problem when you consider the fact that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease!
But take heart! It's a problem you can help fix by convincing your company to take part in the American Heart Association's National Walking Day.
On this day, employees are encouraged to wear sneakers to work and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It's a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to give your coworkers a friendly push toward a healthier life.

Illinois Judge Ratings
All judges running for retention, as well as candidates for Illinois judicial offices who won in the March 20 primary election, have been rated by Illinois State Bar Association
In counties outside Cook, ISBA conducts an advisory poll of members in the circuit or district from which a candidate seeks election or retention. Licensed lawyers who are not members of ISBA may request a ballot. The poll reflects the opinion of those lawyers who choose to respond, and not the opinion of ISBA.
"Voters often have difficulty learning about the qualifications of candidates for judicial office," said John E. Thies, of Urbana, president of the 33,000-member organization. "These independent ratings and polls are based on the views of the candidates' peers, and I encourage voters to consider them when deciding how to vote on November 6."
The ISBA, with offices in Springfield and Chicago, provides professional services to Illinois lawyers, and education and services to the public.

Illinois Open Data Site
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is ordering state agencies to make more data available online and urging local governments to do the same.
Agencies now have to make sharing data a priority when setting up new computer systems. They also have to step up their efforts to find raw data to share.
Information ranging from daily traffic to retail sales is already available. But that's just a fraction of the facts and figures generated by state government.
Agencies have four months to produce a plan for complying with the executive order issued Tuesday.
A "chief information officer" will establish policies to guide the project. Quinn says local governments can use that policy manual to launch their own transparency efforts.

These stakeholders include residents, business owners, adjacent property owners, municipalities, townships and counties. Whether you live, work, travel or own a business in the corridor, your input is welcome at the public open house meetings held at key project milestones. You can also:
- Sign-up for study newsletters and emails or submit a comment
- Call the project hotline at 1-855-IDOT HSR (436-8477)
- Write to us at:
