School Board Won't Fight Dirksen TIF District
The Springfield school board has decided not to fight a proposed TIF district on Dirksen Parkway.
Earlier, the board was considering opposing the TIF district.
Some board members said they see the TIF as a challenge for the district, which is already financially strapped.
The Springfield school district recently announced it will have to make cuts and possibly close schools.
Members said they were concerned the TIF would take away possible revenue through taxes.
"I think there's some other ways you can fund economic development in this town through sales tax and through other means, rather than costing education," school board vice president Bill Loobey said.
Some school board members also said the money from the TIF district will short-change the schools.
If property values in the district go up, the schools will still receive money based on what the property is worth now.
